Allama Shibli Nomani

Allama Shibli Nomani (4 June, 1857-18 November, 1914) was an eminent Islamic thinker, famous Sirah writer and a distinguished teacher of MAO College, Aligarh. He first came into contact with Sir Syed Ahmad Khan in 1879 through a letter enquiring about the subscription rate of the journal Tahzibul Akhlaq. In 1881, he accompanied his father to Aligarh to meet his elder brother Mahdi Hasan, a student of MAO College. During his stay in Aligarh, Shibli got the opportunity to meet Sir Syed at the instance of his father. He presented an Arabic qasidah (ode) to Sir Sayed who appreciated it very much and published it along with its Urdu translation in the Aligarh Institute Gazette, which he edited. It was in February 1883 that Shibli was appointed by Sir Syed Ahmad Khan as Professor of Persian and Assistant Professor of Arabic in MAO College. Soon, in 1886, he was promoted as Professor of Arabic also. In this capacity, he served the College for about 15 years.
